What I eat in a day

I read an article yesterday about what Kerri Walsh Jennings (the Olympic volley ball player) eats in a day. I was flabbergasted to see that she really doesn’t eat that much and she barely eats any vegetables. I want to preface this by saying, I am not here to judge or criticize anyone, but I would be lying if I said her diet didn’t shock me. I started thinking about all the horrible diets out there that I’ve heard of. Low fat diets, “IIFYM” diets, the Cookie Diet… I can’t believe any of these actually work. I used to compete in bodybuilding competitions where the end goal was to be 3-8% body fat and I can guarantee the diets of the girls competing were not nutritionally sound. I see blogs and Instagram accounts everyday that post little salads for lunch or smoothies for every meal. Seriously!? What the actual f*ck? No one can eat a smoothie for every meal and still be ok, you just can’t. It wouldn’t bother me so much if these people didn’t have thousands of followers, but they do…and lots of them are middle school girls. Girls who are already pressured to eat less and workout more, or to look like the latest skinny model. These girls are being fed bullsh*t nutritional information and that really bothers me.

So in light of this, I wanted to share what I actually eat in a typical day. I am not skinny by any model standards but I am in the right weight range for my body. I workout about 5-6 days a week and walk/hike with my dog everyday, so my calorie intake fluctuates depending on how hard my workout was. I am also busy, and I don’t cook every meal! If I am not developing a recipe, I keep things really simple and often just go to the Whole Foods salad bar for lunch. I eat real food and hardly ever count calories, I just follow the paleo principles. No gluten, no dairy, no soy, no beans, no added sugar. By doing this, I am able to maintain my weight without counting calories. I do understand that some people are trying to loose weight though, and that’s fine as long as it is done sustainably. I have days when I do count my calories because “oooh sh*t, I had a ton of paleo cookies this weekend and I need to look bomb in that dress for so-and-so’s event!” I get it, but the point is to do this sustainably and not starve yourself everyday with avocado toast and a friken fruit smoothie for lunch. This is why I would like to put my diet out there and show you what I actually eat in a day. I hope I can be an example for girls and guys out there who are looking up to bloggers and want to know how they stay healthy and in shape! Here goes!

Breakfast

• Coffee with unsweetened almond milk.
​• 2 eggs, over medium. Fried in lots of Ghee.
• Half an avocado squished on top.
• Some papaya with lime. I usually don’t eat fruit in the morning but I was craving some papaya.

Lunch

Salad from the Whole Foods salad bar, told you! Here’s what I got in it…

• Lettuce, tomatoes, carrots, beets, cucumber, turkey, butternut squash, pumpkin seeds.
• Topped with oil and balsamic vinegar

Snack

I usually eat a scoop of almond butter or coconut butter for a snack. If you haven’t tried it yet, you have to try Nikki’s coconut butter, it’s like eating frosting!

• 1 tablespoon coconut butter

Dinner

I cooked something tonight, but I don’t always have time. Simplicity is key!

• Flat iron steak! About 6 oz of meat tonight. I just eat until I’m full, no measuring for me!
• Mashed cauliflower with lots of butter mixed in
• Green beans with olive oil and salt.

Midnight Snack

Seeeeeee I’m not perfect, I love my sweets! For “desert” I had…

• Paleo Bakehouse brownie
• Primal Kitchen protein bar

Totals for the day

There you have it, my macronutrient ratios are right in the typical paleo range. This varies day to day but I try to stay near this range. I really don’t even think about this when I’m eating or even log it. I just make sure at each of my meals that I have a protein source, fat source and a small carbohydrate source. If I have a smoothie for breakfast, I won’t eat fruit for lunch…  If I have a low carb breakfast, I can add fruit in later in the day. My calories for this day were about 1,600. This is slightly in the lower end for me, I try to eat between 1,500-2,000 calories a day.

Pale-YOU

Everyone has there own way of doing things and I’m not going to sit here and tell you to eat what I eat everyday. What I am going to say is PALE-YOU! I truly believe a paleo based diet can help so many people and that is why I am studying to be a nutritionist. Yes, all my diet advice is going to be paleo based, but in the end you need to modify your diet to fit YOUR needs. I hope my diet can help give others a guideline of how I eat to stay healthy but it is not the end-all solution for every one and every thing. Eat real food, stop starving yourselves and question other celebrities or magazine advice. Just because Kate Hudson/Kim Kardashian/Kerri Walsh Jennings eats it, doesn’t mean you should. Do YOU, Pale-YOU!

  1. I loved this post! it’s quite hard to find Paleo “what I eat in a day” things, but I’m so glad that I found this. (Also I’m glad because it confirms I’m not the only one to enjoy scoops of almond butter as a snack 🙂 ). Looking forward to reading more of your posts!
